On February 4th, RCA’s robotics team concluded a successful year at the First LEGO League State competition. Hosted at Georgia Gwinnett College, the team comprised of 5th, 7th, and 8th-graders was recognized with the judges’ award for “Top Overall Performance.”

The First LEGO League challenges kids in over 80 countries to think like scientists and engineers. Each year’s competition has three parts: the robot game, the project, and the core values. RCA’s team of ten students participated in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (robot game) and developing a solution to a problem they have identified (project) while guided by the league’s core values of celebrating discovery, teamwork, and gracious professionalism.

The theme for 2016 was “Animal Allies”. Teams identified a problem that typically occurs with human to animal interaction, designed a solution to create better ways for animals and humans to coexist, and presented their case to judges with posters, figurine models and more.

RCA director of information technology and robotics team coach, Junior Bernadin reflected on the year stating, “It is truly an honor to watch our RCA students utilizing and mastering STEM concepts at such a young age. These critical thinkers will definitely help solve problems and innovate the technology of the future.”
